Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) has thrown a challenge at Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to make serious efforts to recover the coastal ecosystem in Jakarta Bay.

"Walhi has challenged Anies, as the Jakarta governor, to remain committed and demonstrate the courage to recover the coastal ecosystem," Director of Jakarta-branch of Walhi Tubagus Sholeh Achmadi noted in a protest in front of the Jakarta Governor's Office on Friday.

Achmadi has urged Baswedan to uphold the promise made while campaigning for the gubernatorial election in 2018.

"We still remember and record Anies' statement on September 26, 2018, that reclamation (of the Jakarta Bay) must be stopped. Reclamation is part of history and not part of the future," Achmadi noted.

However, he pointed out that Baswedan appeared to have forgotten his promise by issuing building permits (IMB) in the reclaimed islets.

"We observed that Anies has overlooked his own promise to stop reclamation, because if not, there is a potential that the license for development of the islands that had been revoked can be restarted," Achmadi stated.
