Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo inaugurated Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the National Police chief at the State Palace, here on Wednesday, to replace General Idham Azis, due to retire in early February of 2021.

The head of state also promoted Prabowo to the rank of general from commissioner general based on Presidential Decree Number 7/Polri/2021 dated January 27, 2021.

Prabowo’s inauguration as new chief of the National Police, based on Presidential Decree Number 5/Polri/2021, dated January 25, 2021, came a week after the House of Representatives (DPR) approved his nomination at a plenary meeting on January 20.

The plenary meeting was held after Prabowo underwent a fit-and-proper test at the House's Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, on January 20, 2021.

President Widodo proposed Prabowo’s name to the DPR as sole candidate for the National Police chief’s post on January 13, 2020.

Prabowo, who graduated from the Police Academy in 1991, was appointed chief of the Solo City Police in 2011. He once handled matters pertaining to the suicide bombing attack on the Bethel Injil Sepenuh Church (GBIS) in the city.

One year later, he was appointed chief of the sub-directorate II of the general crime directorate at the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim). In 2013, he was promoted to the post of general crime director at the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Police.

When Widodo was elected as Indonesian president in 2014, Prabowo was appointed as his adjutant. Two years later, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and appointed chief of the Banten Provincial Police until 2018.

In 2018, he was appointed chief of the internal affairs division at the National Police and was promoted to the rank of inspector general.

Prabowo was later appointed as chief of the National Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim).
