Cawas Subdistrict Chief Much. Nasir said the heavy downpours in Klaten since Wednesday (4/4) night until the small hours of the following day caused the Dengkeng river to overlow.
"The water started to raise and inundated houses in Bawak and Kuncen since Wednesday (4/4) night reaching a grown person's waist. But the water began to subside on Thursday at 8 am local time," Nasir said.
And the flood waters have even broken the embankment in Sidorejo hamlet and an electric pole collapsed.
He said the flood was the worst in Kuncen hamlet neighboring Bawak, so that a number of residents whose houses are inundated had to be evacuated to the nearest house of prayer (madrasah)
But the people who had been evacuated on Thursday morning have started to return to their homes to remove the dirt brought by the flood waters.
He said he has started to make a file of the houses and public facilities which were damaged for report to the Klaten regency administration.
The floods, he said, have also disrupted the study of pupils in Bawak Cawas which had to be moved to the Muhammadiyah Muslim religious school some two kilometers from the flooded schools.
There are 16 pupils who were supposed to undergo an English examination had to be moved to another school two kilometers away.
