Temanggung, ANTARA JATENG - President Joko Widodo has commissioned a suspension bridge in Temanggung District, Central Java.

"Normally a president commissions only big bridges, market centers or factories, but small or big projects are similarly important for the people," the president said.

The suspension bridge spanning the Kali Galeh river in the village of Gandurejo, sub-district of Parakan, is important as it provides connection between a number of village and sub-districts, he said.

The bridge will contribute to facilitating logistics and mobility of people, he said.

"Now speed not strength would ensure victory. It is not powerful countries but fast moving countries would emerged as victor in a competition. Therefore, we need to move fast," he said.

He said construction of small bridges would be put in priority, adding since 2015, there have been 10 small bridges in Banten and 4 in Magelang have been built.

The project might cost only from Rp3 billion to Rp6 billion each but they are very important in their contribution to economic development in district areas, he said.

"I have told the Public Works and Housing Minister to give priority to development of suspension bridges. This year, around 60 suspension bridges would be built and the number would increase next year as they are very important," he added.
