Semarang, Antara Jateng - Production of basic materials in the country would help minimize the need for imports saving badly needed foreign exchange, a statistic official said.

Margo Yuwono, head of the Central Java office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) cited textile industry is a major importer of basic material, while the raw materials are available in abundance in the country.

The condition should be an opportunity for investors to produce the basic materials needed by the textile industry, Margo said here on Saturday.

"At least half finished goods like yarns should be mass produced enough to feed the domestic textile industry and save a lot of foreign exchange," he said.

In June 2016, Central Java's imports rose 4.78 percent to US$891.68 million , from US$851.02 million in May.

Textiles and textile products were the second largest imports in value reaching US$138.91 million in 2015. The largest imports were mineral products valued at US$398.85 million.

Central Java, however, still recorded a surplus in trade of non oil/gas commodities reaching US$38.48 million in June.

Its exports of commodities other than oil and gas were valued at US$535.08 million as against imports of US$496.59 million.

Cumulatively in the first half of the year, its international trade in commodities other than oil and gas left a surplus of US$191.95 million.
